BRAIN HEALTH & PHYSIOTHERAPY

While you may have been referred from your doctor to seek physiotherapy treatment following a back or shoulder injury, what you may not know is that physiotherapy can also be beneficial following a brain injury!

A concussion is a brain injury that cannot be identified on routine diagnostic imaging such as an x-ray, CT scan or MRI (1). Any hit to the head, or to your body that jars your head, could cause a concussion. Common causes of a concussion include sport-related injuries, car accident/whiplash injury or even workplace accidents. Signs & symptoms of a concussion include, but are not limited to (2)

  • Headaches

  • Pressure in the head

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Blurred vision

  • Light or sound sensitivity

  • Ringing in the ears

  • Balance problems

  • Feeling tired or drowsy

  • Feeling like you’re “in a fog”

  • Problems concentrating or remembering

  • Feeling easily upset or angered

  • Feeling nervous or anxious

  • Feeling more emotional

  • Normal sleep disturbance

The brain is the centre of everything we do – which means it can affect various systems in our bodies. Physiotherapists provide a multi-modal approach by assessing muscles and joints in the neck and jaw, proprioception and balance systems, cognition and memory, vision and vestibular screening as well as evaluating strength and tolerance to activity. A treatment plan is then designed to target the affected system(s) with the goal of a quicker recovery and return to sport (3), school, or work.

At Spire Physiotherapy, we are passionate about providing a multi-faceted approach to care with a focus on movement, education and wellness. Brain health is no different! From modifying activities and providing symptom-management strategies and resources, to engaging in vision and balance exercises, manual therapy and acupuncture treatment – there is so much more that you can do other than simply “resting” your brain following an injury. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you’ve had a recent head injury and are concerned about any of the above symptoms. We’d love to join you on your brain healing journey!
